Start With the Diagnosis

Androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, thyroid disease, iron deficiency, medication effects, and traction can look similar. Sudden shedding, patchy loss, scalp inflammation, or scarring deserves medical evaluation.

No device or medication can reliably revive follicles that are permanently scarred. Early treatment generally offers more opportunity to preserve existing hair.

Alma TED

TED uses ultrasound-based technology and air pressure to support trans-epidermal delivery of a topical hair-growth formula without needles. Sessions are typically quick and require little downtime. It may appeal to people who want a noninvasive office treatment.

Published independent, peer-reviewed comparative evidence is more limited than it is for established medications. Results vary, multiple sessions and maintenance may be needed, and it should not be described as guaranteed regrowth.

PRP

Platelet-rich plasma uses a patient's own blood, processed to concentrate platelets, then injected into the scalp. Studies suggest it may improve density or thickness in some patients with androgenetic alopecia, but preparation methods and protocols vary.

Drawbacks include needles, discomfort, bruising, cost, and repeated treatments. Blood disorders, anticoagulation, active infection, or certain medical conditions may affect candidacy.

Minoxidil

Topical minoxidil has decades of evidence and is FDA approved for common forms of pattern hair loss. It is relatively affordable, but consistent long-term use is needed. Irritation, unwanted facial hair, and an early temporary shed can occur.

Low-dose oral minoxidil is used off label by some clinicians. It can cause swelling, lightheadedness, faster heart rate, and unwanted body hair, so blood-pressure and medical review matter.

Combining Therapies
