Hair Shedding After Weight Loss or GLP-1 Treatment

Diffuse shedding after rapid weight loss is usually telogen effluvium, a delayed response to physical or nutritional stress. The medication may contribute indirectly through reduced intake and faster weight loss, but other causes should be checked.
Why Shedding Is Delayed
Hair follicles cycle through growth, transition, and resting phases. A major stressor can shift more follicles into the resting phase. Shedding often becomes noticeable two to four months later, so the trigger may not seem connected.
Rapid weight loss, low protein or calorie intake, iron deficiency, thyroid disease, surgery, fever, childbirth, and medication changes are common triggers.
What It Looks Like
Telogen effluvium usually causes increased hair in the shower or brush and diffuse thinning rather than a smooth bald patch. The scalp generally looks normal. Pattern hair loss may become more visible at the same time.
Patchy loss, scalp pain, redness, scale, scarring, eyebrow loss, or other systemic symptoms warrants prompt evaluation.
What Helps
Avoid stopping a prescribed GLP-1 medication abruptly without discussing the reason. Review the rate of weight loss, protein and calorie intake, iron status, thyroid testing, medications, and other symptoms. More supplements are not always better. Excess vitamin A or selenium can worsen hair loss, and biotin can interfere with laboratory tests.
Once the trigger is corrected, shedding often improves over several months, but visible density takes longer because hair grows slowly. Minoxidil or office treatments may be considered when pattern loss coexists.
