InBody Scans: Body Fat, Visceral Fat, Skeletal Muscle, and Phase Angle Explained

An InBody scan gives a detailed estimate of body composition. It is most useful for tracking trends under consistent testing conditions, not as a perfect measurement of every tissue.
Body Fat Percentage
Body fat percentage is estimated fat mass divided by total body weight. It can change even when scale weight does not. A person can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time.
Bioelectrical impedance estimates are affected by hydration, recent food, exercise, alcohol, temperature, and fluid shifts. Compare scans performed under similar conditions.
Skeletal Muscle Mass
Skeletal muscle mass estimates the muscle used for posture and movement. During weight loss, resistance training and adequate protein help reduce lean-tissue loss. A single small change may reflect water or glycogen rather than true new muscle.
Segmental analysis can show estimated distribution between arms, legs, and trunk, but it is not a diagnostic test for injury or neurologic disease.
Visceral Fat
Visceral fat surrounds internal abdominal organs and is associated with cardiometabolic risk. InBody provides an estimate, not a CT or MRI measurement. The number is helpful when it moves alongside waist circumference, blood pressure, glucose, and lipid markers.
Phase Angle
Phase angle is derived from resistance and reactance as current passes through the body. It relates broadly to cell membrane integrity and body-cell mass, but it is influenced by age, sex, body size, hydration, illness, and device methodology.
A higher value is not always better in isolation, and a low result does not diagnose malnutrition. Trends and clinical context matter.
Get a Cleaner Comparison
Test at a similar time of day, after using the restroom, before a workout, and with similar food and fluid intake. Avoid comparing a fasted morning scan with one taken after a hard leg workout.
