Laser Hair Removal in Albuquerque: How Many Sessions Do You Need?

A Smoother Routine Starts With the Right Plan
If you are tired of shaving, waxing, razor bumps, or constantly planning around unwanted hair, laser hair removal can provide a meaningful long-term reduction. The most common question patients ask is simple: how many sessions will I need? For most people, the answer is a series rather than a single appointment.
At Modern Edge Family Practice in Albuquerque, we use the Alma Soprano Titanium Special Edition. Its in-motion approach gradually heats the treatment area while integrated cooling is designed to keep the skin surface more comfortable. Your plan is individualized according to the area, hair characteristics, skin tone, medical history, and response to treatment.
Why One Treatment Is Not Enough
Hair grows in repeating phases. Laser treatment is most effective when a follicle contains actively growing, adequately pigmented hair. Because only a portion of follicles are in that stage during any appointment, later sessions are needed to reach follicles as they cycle into active growth.
Many patients require approximately six to eight treatments, but that is not a guarantee. The face may require more frequent treatment and ongoing maintenance because facial hair can be strongly influenced by hormones. Larger body areas are usually treated farther apart. Your provider will recommend timing based on the area and your response rather than using the same interval for everyone.
What Affects the Number of Sessions?
- Treatment area: facial, underarm, bikini, back, chest, and leg hair cycle differently.
- Hair color and thickness: coarse, dark hair generally provides a clearer target than very fine or lightly pigmented hair.
- Skin tone and recent sun exposure: settings must be selected safely for the skin being treated.
- Hormonal influences: PCOS, menopause, testosterone therapy, and other hormonal changes may contribute to continued growth.
- Consistency: missed or widely delayed visits can lengthen the overall treatment course.
- Individual biology: density, follicle depth, medications, and prior hair-removal methods all matter.
What Should You Do Before Treatment?
- Shave the treatment area as directed, usually the day before or the morning of treatment.
- Do not wax, tweeze, thread, or epilate between sessions because the follicle needs to remain available as a target.
- Avoid tanning and disclose recent sun exposure or sunburn before every appointment.
- Tell us about medications, skin products, pregnancy, new diagnoses, or changes in your health.
- Arrive with clean skin and avoid applying deodorant, lotion, oil, or self-tanner over the treatment area unless instructed otherwise.
When Will You Notice a Difference?
Treated hairs do not always disappear immediately. Some shed over the following days or weeks, and regrowth may become patchier and finer over time. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that results vary with hair color and thickness, treatment area, laser type, and skin color. It also emphasizes sun protection after treatment.
Laser hair removal is best described as long-term hair reduction. Hormonal changes and previously dormant follicles can lead to new growth later, so occasional maintenance may be helpful.
