How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal, and What to Avoid Afterwards

Good preparation improves comfort and reduces avoidable treatment delays. Instructions can differ by body area, device protocol, skin type, medication use, and recent sun exposure, so follow the clinic's directions even if you have had laser treatment elsewhere. Your provider will walk through all of it before your first laser hair removal session at Modern Edge Family Practice.
Before your appointment
Shave the area according to clinic instructions, typically within about 24 hours of treatment. Shaving removes hair above the skin while leaving the follicular target in place. Arrive with clean skin and avoid deodorant, makeup, lotion, oils, fragrance, or numbing products on the treatment area unless specifically approved.
Do not wax, pluck, tweeze, thread, or epilate during the period specified by the clinic. These methods pull the hair from the follicle and can leave too little target for effective treatment.
Avoid tanning and disclose sun exposure
Recent tanning can increase the risk of burns and pigment changes because additional pigment in the skin can absorb energy. Avoid intentional tanning and tanning beds, and tell the provider about recent outdoor exposure, sunburn, self-tanner, or spray tan. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing.
Do not hide recent tanning to keep an appointment. Rescheduling is safer than treating skin that is not appropriate for the planned settings.
Review medications and skincare
Provide an updated medication and supplement list. Some medications can increase photosensitivity or affect healing. Do not stop a prescription medication on your own; the treating clinician should decide whether timing or settings need to change.
Retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, bleaching products, and other irritating skincare may need to be paused around facial treatment. The required interval depends on the product, strength, and skin response.
After laser hair removal
Mild redness, warmth, or follicular swelling can occur. Use only the soothing products recommended by the clinic. Avoid scratching, aggressive exfoliation, and attempts to pull out shedding hairs. Gentle cleansing and sun protection are usually important.
If the area remains warm or irritated, temporarily avoid hot tubs, saunas, very hot showers, and strenuous exercise. Avoid fragranced or irritating products until the skin has settled. Continue shaving between sessions if needed, but do not wax or pluck.
Call the clinic if something seems wrong
Contact the clinic for blistering, severe or increasing pain, extensive crusting, drainage, signs of infection, or concerning pigment changes. Prompt guidance is preferable to treating a possible reaction at home with unapproved products.
Plan around the treatment series
Laser hair reduction requires multiple sessions because hair follicles cycle through different growth phases. Keep appointments at the recommended interval, but report changes in sun exposure, medications, health, pregnancy status, or skin condition before each treatment.
